How USASpending.gov Works and Why SubsidyLookup Makes It Easier

February 16, 2026

USASpending.gov is the official federal platform for tracking all federal awards — grants, contracts, loans, and direct payments. It's an impressive achievement in government transparency, publishing hundreds of gigabytes of data covering trillions of dollars in spending going back to FY2001.

What USASpending does well

The platform has powerful bulk download tools, API access, and agency-level dashboards. Policy researchers and data journalists can download entire fiscal years of data for analysis. The data dictionary is thorough and the update cadence is reasonably fast.

Where it's harder to use

USASpending is designed for a sophisticated audience. Finding farm-specific payments requires knowing which awarding agencies to filter, which award types correspond to financial assistance, and how to interpret fields like assistance_transaction_unique_key and cfda_number. County-level filtering requires knowing FIPS codes. Recipient lookups return raw results without aggregated totals.

What SubsidyLookup adds

SubsidyLookup pre-processes USDA financial assistance data from USASpending and presents it through interfaces built for agricultural context:

  • Named recipient profiles with lifetime and annual totals — browse recipients
  • State and county breakdowns with year-over-year comparisons — browse states
  • Program pages with plain-English descriptions — browse programs
  • Full-text search across recipients and programs — search now

Data freshness

SubsidyLookup is updated when new fiscal year data is published on USASpending. We load complete fiscal years rather than incremental updates, so you can trust that a given year's numbers represent the full picture. See our data sources page for details on coverage and methodology.
